The climate in which these forests occur is characterized by hot summers and cold winters, with precipitation (including snow) ranging from 30 to 60 inches (76-152 cm) per year. This moisture usually is well distributed throughout the year, and the frost-free growing season usually lasts from 90 to 200 days.
Hardwood forests in North America are rich in the number of species present—in all, nearly 800 kinds of trees. Of these, the oaks, yellow poplar, walnut, and maple are commercially important. China has an even richer hardwood variety, with more than 2,000 species of such genera as oak, chestnut, beech, maple, birch, and elm. Japan, New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina also have mixed hardwood forests. |
